In the middle of the XIX century. it was already possible to transport food at low temperatures, but this method was rather primitive and inconvenient. Entrepreneurs have calculated that shipping animal carcasses from Central America to the East Coast is much cheaper than shipping live cattle. However, such carriers could only be carried out in winter, when animal carcasses were loaded into wagons and sent by rail at low air temperatures.
In 1867, it became possible to transport cold meat in the summer. Then the meat was covered with a cloth, and covered with a plentiful layer of ice. Ice had to be replenished every day, but it could only be found at train stations. Later, ice also appeared at railway stations.
The ice was used to keep the temperature low for both train and ship transportation. The fans turned on at the same time helped to achieve very good results. Often, ice was placed at the top of the cargo compartment of the vehicle, the cold went down and cooled the load, displacing warm air through special openings.
Such improvements and ideas allowed the slaughter industry to develop widely. The needs increased, and more and more frozen foodstuffs were transported every day. However, such transportation was unreliable. If the ice melted before the cargo was delivered to the desired point, then in almost all such cases the cargo turned out to be damaged. At the beginning of the twentieth century, ice was used as a refrigeration element in all vehicles transporting food products.
In 1929, trucks appeared that, using the energy of the cardan shaft, could mechanically cool the refrigeration compartment. Ice was a thing of the past, but at that time semi-trailers were already gaining momentum, which needed a refrigeration unit independent of the vehicle engine.
The first semi-trailer capable of mechanically maintaining a low temperature appeared in the United States of America, in Minneapolis. Then, in 1938, it was developed by Frederick Jones. The first purpose of such a semi-trailer was to transport poultry meat from slaughterhouses to points of sale.
F. Jones, in principle, designed a powerful air conditioner that was resistant to road vibrations and loads. He then placed his instrument in front of the truck’s cargo area behind the cab. This improvement solved all the problems.
F. Johnson patented his system only in 1940. Over time, it found its application on ships and trains. This discovery created a real opportunity for the first time in history to start transporting products over long distances at any time of the year. Shares of agricultural and food enterprises have also significantly increased in price. Since then, factories, slaughterhouses, farms and markets have been able to offer a more varied and better range of products.
