Features of the transportation of goods in winter

Delivery of goods is required throughout the year. This is what it says on the dispatching course. However, cargo transportation in winter is more difficult to organize due to unpredictable weather conditions. What is the peculiarity of logistics during this period.

What are the difficulties of winter transportation of goods
In winter, the weather is unfavorable for most types of work. Due to low temperatures, you need to carefully monitor the condition of the car, which may malfunction. Restrictions also apply to workers who need less exposure to the cold. However, first of all, the danger during transportation does not come from temperature, but from weather conditions.

It is impossible to completely get rid of icy roads on the roads. Slippery road surfaces are a common cause of accidents during the winter season. Road services make a lot of efforts in order to secure traffic, but dangerous sections are often still encountered. On slippery roads, it can be difficult to drive even passenger cars: the risk of drifts increases, and the braking distance becomes several times longer. In the case of freight transport, the situation is complicated by the large dimensions and weight of trucks.

Ice increases the risk of injury to workers who are loading and unloading. For this reason, they require special protective equipment, and each worker is obliged to learn safety precautions and first aid rules.

Strong side winds can change the trajectory of the truck. It is especially dangerous on ice. The wind can blow the truck to the side of the road or into the oncoming lane. The larger the truck, the higher the risks due to the large body area. In such conditions, even the professionalism of the driver may not help to avoid difficulties on a dangerous section of the road.

Precipitation in winter is primarily a deterioration in visibility, especially at night. During a severe blizzard, the driver of the truck can only distinguish the next few meters of the road, because of this, he may not have time to react to a dangerous situation. If snow removal equipment is not working at this time, the road becomes more slippery, which makes driving even more difficult.

Day length
Already at 16: 00-17: 00 daylight hours ends. In the dark, even on a lighted track, driving becomes more difficult, especially in bad weather and snowstorms. On small roads between small settlements, there is no full-fledged lighting, so it becomes especially difficult to drive a car over long distances.

Necessary equipment for winter transportation
When transporting goods requiring temperature conditions, it is necessary to maintain the necessary conditions inside the body. For this, special vehicles are used with the possibility of heating the cargo part.

Some materials become more brittle at low temperatures. Therefore, during winter transportation, it is necessary to carefully pack the cargo using foam rubber, cardboard and air packaging film.

With low temperatures and strong winds, manual loading is practically excluded. The use of loader cranes and automatic loaders is mandatory. If the cargo has requirements for a certain temperature, then loading should take place as quickly as possible in order to prevent hypothermia.

There are also rules for working personnel:

special requirements for uniforms: warm non-slip shoes, warm clothing, work gloves;
the ability to provide first aid;
the presence of a first aid kit at the workplace.
What goods cannot be transported in winter
The restrictions apply primarily to those goods that are demanding on temperature and weather conditions, for example:

cut and potted plants;
fresh fruits and vegetables;
cosmetics and medicines;
fragile finishing materials;
some chemicals;
many food items.
If necessary, goods from this list can be transported with preliminary preparation. It is necessary to carefully pack the cargo, use trucks with the ability to maintain temperature. Loading and unloading should take the shortest possible time.
